Bob, that is awesome of you to offer your home to us, thank you. I hope my friends further South of me are getting either out of town (preferably) or have got everything in order. Rita is going to be a rough one. Back in 83 when Alicia came through, Houstonians as far North as Conroe were without power for over 2 weeks. I would like to think I am ready, but only time will tell. Will keep you all informed as to what is going on.
On a better note, I am glad that our friends in FL have withered it out and are fine.
ZD, I live about 160 miles off the coast and things are still a mess here, and we were on the west side of the storm. Just be sure you have plenty of food and fuel. And having some extra ice might come in handy. All you guys are in my prayers, Bob

<!--StartFragment -->I was just at lunch and I already see the panick in peoples faces. Gas stations are running out of fuel, Sams, Kroger, HEB were ALL out of water, batteries, candles and such. I-45 as far North and South as I could see, was bumper to bumper traffic. I over heard one lady at Kroger saying that she took her kids to the airport to send them Grandmas and it took her 3 hours to get to the airport. We are approximately 15 miles from IAH......so, if you are thinking about heading to Dallas, stay off I-45 cause you may make it there by Friday. Choose an alternate route. News casts say the best bet is to head to San Antonio. Will keep everyone informed.
Katie, Sandy, and the rest of our friends in the Southern part of Houston the best of luck....if you can, get out of there, quickly. When Alicia hit in 83, this area that I live in, 35 miles North of Houston, was without power for almost 2 weeks, water and gas for almost a week (from what I have been told).
If I can do anything to help anyone, please let me know.

As of 3:30pm CST, Rita was upgraded to a CAT 5 hurricane and the winds are still rising from the now current 167mph. The prediction for landfall was around 4am on Saturday morning but has been moved up to Friday afternoon.
I just heard, not more than 5 minutes ago, that as of 6am Thursday morning, if you are in a flood zone or a storm surge area in the Houston area, MANDATORY evacuation will be enforced.

Hopefully everyone will heed the warnings and evacuate rather then try to ride this out......Stay safe everyone!!!!!!!!

Now listed as the 5th strongest hurricane on record in terms of atmospheric pressure drop.
You are all in my prayers here. Having been through quite a few hurricanes in my life, I urge you all to get out of the way- any way you can. This one is going to be horrific if it stays a Cat 5 or even as a Cat 4.

Now the 3rd strongest hurricane on record. Just behind Gilbert and the storm of 1935.

Seriously, please do come to stay if you would like to.

You all are very generous and we thank you. Looks like Rita has slowed down somewhat....not sure if that is good or bad (was hoping it would speed up and move on through quickly). She also may diminish to a CAT 3 by the top she comes ashore. Keep your fingers crossed and please keep everyone in your prayers.
Hey guys, be careful. You all have a place here in VA as well...
Come out to California, the weather's great! You can help me pack -- I'm moving to Virginia in two weeks! Woo hoo!
But seriously, stay safe. I'm thinking about y'alls (see, I can speak Texan).
